“For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.” — Romans 8:2a
There is a powerful truth hidden in Romans 8:2 that every believer should understand: in Christ, you have been brought under a new law—the law of the Spirit of life.
Many people read the expression “the law of sin and death” as though sin and death are describing one single law. However, when we carefully consider the context of Romans 7 and 8, we see a distinction between the law of sin and death as its consequence.
Paul's message is that the superior law—the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus—has set you free from the dominion of sin and from death.
A New Law Is at Work in You
Romans 7 describes humanity's struggle under the power of sin. Paul explains how the law of sin operated within him, producing a conflict between his desire to do what was right and the sinful nature working within him. But then comes the glorious declaration of Romans 8:2:The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free.” Notice the change. There was a law that produced bondage, but now there is a higher law that produces freedom. There was the operation of sin, but now there is the operation of the Spirit of life. This is the life you have received in Christ.
You Have Passed From Death Unto Life
Jesus said: “He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.” — John 5:24
This is not merely a promise about something that will happen someday. It describes a present spiritual reality for the believer. You have passed from death unto life. Your identity is no longer defined by the spiritual condition of the world around you. You belong to Christ, and the life of God is at work in you. This does not mean believers ignore physical realities or pretend that human mortality does not exist. Rather, it means death does not have the final spiritual authority over the believer, because Christ has conquered death and given eternal life.
Refuse to Live Under the Fear of Death
Fear can influence the way people think, speak and live. But the believer has been given a different foundation. You don't have to allow the fear of death to dominate your thoughts.
You don't have to constantly speak from fear. You don't have to build your expectations around the limitations of the natural world. Instead, let your consciousness be shaped by the life you have received in Christ. The Bible says: “For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free...” — Romans 8:2 That is your declaration of freedom.
The Life of God Is at Work in You
The Christian life is more than adopting a religious identity. It is participation in the life that comes from God. The Holy Spirit lives in you, and God's life is at work in you. Therefore, let your words reflect your faith in Christ. Let your thoughts be filled with the Word of God. Let your expectations be shaped by what God has accomplished through Christ rather than by fear. You can boldly declare: “The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. God's life is at work in me. I belong to Christ, and I walk in the victory He has given me.” What a glorious reality! You are no longer under the dominion of the old life. You have been brought into the life of Christ.
