And they all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak
with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance (Acts 2:4).
Speaking in tongues
is one of the signs that you have received the Holy Spirit though it’s not the
only sign, yet it’s a very important one. On the very first day the Holy spirit
came down to begin His ministry in the earth, the Bible says, “…And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as rushing
might wind, and filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven
tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled
with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave
them utterance” (Acts2:1-4).
The very first outward sign demonstrated by the apostles
having received the Holy Spirit was speaking in other tongues. The same thing
happened with Paul and the brethren he met in Ephesus. He asked them “Have ye
received the Holy Ghost since ye believed?” and their response was “We have not
so much heard whether there be any Holy Ghost” (Acts 19:2). Consequently, Paul
led them to Christ and laid his hands on them to receive the Holy Spirit (Acts
19:6). Right there, they began to speak in tongues, the same initial sign of
the presence of the Holy Spirit in the lives of the as apostles.
Also, the Bible lets
us know that while the apostle Peter was preaching to Cornelius and the members
his household, the Holy Ghost fell on them that heard the word: “While Peter
yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost
fell on all them which heard the word. And they of the circumcision which
believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the
Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. For they heard them
speak with tongues, and magnify God…” (Acts 10:44-46). The other believers that
went with Peter to Cornelius’ house knew that Cornelius and his household had
received the Holy Ghost; how? Verse forty-six gives us the answer: “for they
heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God.”
Folks who don’t speak
in tongues will have a hard time living the supernatural Christian life for
they are short circuiting the ability of the Spirit in their lives without
knowing it. Speaking in tongues is not a contrivance of gibberish or mumbo
jumbo as some folks think. It’s the spiritual language of the believer
